I think this was a niche comedy. I'm just not sure which niche. Asian viewers? Basket ball players? Ping pong players? Some devious combination of the three? Whichever, it was still mildly outside of its given niche.
Ping Pong Playa is a light, modern comedy about Christopher "C-Dub" Wang and his gradual transition from a "baller" to a ping pong champion. C-Dub has an unusual gift for relating to children and it lends well to his unexpecting promtion to coach for his mother's ping pong class. Through his many urban trials and tribulations, he eventually finds himself comepeting for the Gold Cock. Along the way he learns about friendship, family, and (dare I say it) love, while coming up with new and unique ways to mangle and engligh language.
The writing wasn't bad. Likely a decade too young for my complete enjoyment. The acting was fair simple. Good dialogs, though. Some funny scenes. Fairly quick pacing. But not one of the most original movies of the year. Satisfying, but predictable ending.
Not a date movie in my book. Almost kid friendly. But the teen - mid twenty scene might get more enjoyment out of it than I did. Worth a rental on a slow rainy day.
